Circuito del Abuelo — A Route of History and Epic Challenge 🚴♂️🔥
The Circuito del Abuelo is one of our oldest and most legendary tours. First ridden on August 8, 2020, it has since become one of the most demanding and thrilling experiences of the Tequila Challenge.
The journey begins in the Magical Town of Etzatlán, at its historic train station, as the first rays of sunlight touch the land. Etzatlán is known for its mining past and for the world-record Cielo Tejido, a massive handwoven canopy. From there, we ride to Magdalena, formally established in the 19th century, renowned for its opal mines and the dried lake of 1930 that reshaped its landscape.
We continue toward Plan de Barrancas, a community rebuilt after the devastating 1875 earthquake, where the first mountain pass awaits. The road then leads us to Ixtlán del Río, Nayarit, a town with pre-Hispanic roots and home to the archaeological site of Los Toriles, a vestige of ancient Mesoamerican cultures.
Next is Ahuacatlán, founded in 1530, known for its agricultural traditions and famous guava sweets. Here begins the second climb, taking us to the Santa Muerte Viewpoint. This site, wrapped in mysticism, reflects the deep devotion of local communities that regard Santa Muerte as both protector of travelers and a symbol of faith.
After a 12 km descent, we reach Barranca del Oro, a town with a proud mining history. The route then leads us to Amatlán de Cañas, founded in 1714, celebrated for its hot springs and mountain setting. After a well-deserved pause in its main square, we face the final challenge: a 12 km Hors Catégorie climb, cresting right on the border between Nayarit and Jalisco.
The return takes us through San Marcos, founded in 1740 by Fray Antonio de Jesús, before closing the loop back in Etzatlán. By then, we will have completed an epic 182 km ride | +2,885 m | 3 mountain passes.
