From sunrise in Tequila (1530), we ride through Magdalena and into Hostotipaquillo, once a mining hub of Nueva Galicia.
A thrilling descent leads us to the Santiago River and the monumental La Yesca Dam (208.5 m), an engineering marvel.
Climbs and canyons test our strength before returning to the cobblestones of Hostotipaquillo.
The loop closes in Tequila, where agave fields and history welcome us home.
Hostotipaquillo — Encima de la cueva 🚴♂️ 🌄
With the first rays of sunlight, we set off from the Magical Town of Tequila, founded in 1530 and recognized worldwide as the birthplace of Mexico’s most iconic spirit. Its cobblestone streets and UNESCO-listed agave landscapes make the perfect stage for an unforgettable ride.
Our route takes us through the town of Magdalena, established in the 19th century, famous for its opal mines and for the lake that once defined its geography until it was drained in 1930. As we ride through its historic streets, we pass by the legendary La Lupita restaurant, a local icon that has been serving traditional flavors for nearly 100 years.
From here, we head toward Hostotipaquillo, whose name in Nahuatl means “above the cave.” This town has a rich mining heritage, once considered one of the most important settlements of Nueva Galicia. From Hostotipaquillo, we descend into a breathtaking canyon toward the Santiago River, along a solitary road framed by the tropical dry forest of the region, filled with huizache, prickly pear cactus, and palo dulce.
The highlight awaits: the monumental La Yesca Hydroelectric Dam, inaugurated in 2012, with a curtain wall of 208.5 meters—once ranked among the tallest of its kind in the world. With a capacity of 750 MW, it remains one of Mexico’s most ambitious energy projects. From above, we admire its grandeur before descending to its base for a brief pause, contemplating the sheer scale of this engineering marvel.
Our return begins with the climb back through the mountains, facing challenging ascents and long, winding descents until we reach once more the cobblestone streets of Hostotipaquillo. But the journey doesn’t end there—our ride continues back across the valleys until we arrive again in Tequila, where the town’s colonial arches and agave fields welcome us at the end of this epic loop.
The Hostotipaquillo — Encima de la cueva tour is more than a ride: it’s a journey across history, engineering wonders, and landscapes that test endurance and ignite the spirit.
