Volcano Tequila — The Circle of Fire and Tradition 🌋🚴‍♂️

The adventure begins at sunrise in the Magical Town of Tequila, founded in 1530, where the scent of roasted agave fills the air and cobblestone streets lead toward the slopes of the majestic Tequila Volcano — a dormant giant that has watched over this land for millions of years.

We ride south toward Amatitán, birthplace of blue agave and home to some of the oldest tequila traditions in Mexico. The route winds past legendary distilleries and along the edge of a vast canyon, revealing breathtaking views that define the region’s rugged beauty.

Continuing through El Arenal, founded in the 1500s as one of the earliest colonial settlements in Jalisco, we pass by Santa Cruz de las Flores, where the silhouette of El Castillo del Tequila rises among agave fields like a guardian of the valley. From here, the road leads to Huaxtla, a quiet village surrounded by rolling hills and open skies that frame the volcano’s grandeur.

We then reach Tala, known for its centuries-old sugarcane mills, before turning toward Teuchitlán, cradle of the Guachimontones pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage archaeological site. These circular pyramids date back over two thousand years and are unique in all of Mesoamerica. At their feet lies La Vega Dam, whose calm waters reflect both the sky and the ancient land we ride through.

The route continues toward Ahualulco del Mercado, where we pass alongside the historic Hacienda El Carmen, built in the 16th century and once one of the region’s most important agricultural estates. We press on to Etzatlán, a town with pre-Hispanic roots and colonial charm, where we stop for a well-deserved coffee break surrounded by colorful architecture and local hospitality.

The final stretch takes us toward Magdalena, known for its opal mines that have been worked since the 1800s, before turning back toward Tequila, completing a full circle around the volcano that gave life to this land, its people, and its most famous spirit.

The Volcano Tequila Tour is more than a cycling route — it’s a journey through centuries of history, nature, and culture, where every climb and every curve reveals a new story carved into the heart of Jalisco.
